Abstract
Four surveys were carried out in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2018 to determine species composition of fish in Dong Ho (Ha Tien, Kien Giang) including 126 species belonging to 88 genus, 47 families and 20 orders. Order Perciformes was the most popular with 13 families (27,7%), 18 genus (20,5%), 30 species (23,8%). The predominant families of species were Gobiidae (14 species), Cyprinidae, Cynoglossidae, Mugilidae (each with 7 species); Sciaenidae, Serranidae, Siganidae (each with 5 species); Bagridae, Eleotridae, Terapontidae, Polynemidae (each with 4 species); Muraenesocidae, Clupeidae, Gerreidae, Lutjanidae, Tetraodontidae (each with 3 species). Four species were endangered and are rare fishes listed Red Data Book of Vietnam: Elops saurus, Anodontostoma chacunda, Probarbus jullieni, Toxotes chatareus, all of them are at Vulnarable level.
The results also showed that there were four main fishing gears included long fence trap net, simple Thai trap net, small dai in river, electric scoop net and the seasonal gear is the plunge basket to catch eel catfishes. Fishing gear types for high cathches are usually concentrated in the saline season from January to August each year.
This article would be the first study about fish species composition in Dong Ho lagoon (Ha Tien, Kien Giang) with the purpose of providing the scientific data on species composition and fishing gears in the lagoon as a scientific basis for biodiversity conservation, sustainable fishery development combined with environmental protection and ecotourism for this area.
