Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of beta-glucan feeding duration on the growth performance and salinity tolerance and physiological response of striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) fingerlings under brackish water conditions. The experiment consisted of five treatments under a salinity of 10‰ with different beta-glucan supplementation durations (2g/kg): no supplementation (control), 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 4 weeks, with 4 replications in each treatment. The results showed no statistically significant differences (p>0.05) between treatments in terms of growth performance. After 72 h of salinity shock (20‰ of salinity), fish in the control and 1-week treatment had the lowest survival rate, while the treatments with longer beta-glucan supplementation durations, especially the 4-week group, recorded the higher survival rate (p<0.05). Cortisol and glucose levels in the fish increased during salinity shock, but the increase was statistically significantly lower (p<0.05) in the 4-week and 3-week feeding groups compared to the control, 1-week and 2-week feeding groups. The study results indicated that the duration of beta-glucan supplementation did not significantly affect growth performance but had a positive effect on the salinity tolerance of striped catfish.
