Abstract

The management and monitoring of fishing vessels play an important role in combating IUU fishing, removing the EC’s Yellow Card. This study focused on assessing the management and monitoring status of fishing vessles in the selected areas by primary and secondary information. The study results showed that: i) the fishing vessels with max length above 15 m in Khanh Hoa, Binh Dinh and Quang Nam province were 814; 3,118 and 748 vessels respectively; ii) 16% of fishers understood clearly the needs & regulations of VMS; iii) there were three features of VMS were rated and requested at “high requirement”; iv) 5.3% of fishermen did not require to keep fishing ground secret; and v) the fishing vessel management was still manual, it was neccessary to have modern VMS and the process of managing and monitoring fishing vessels at sea.
