Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the ability to catch crabs of two new traps with dropping doors. The study used an experimental method through the arrangement and capture of the same fishing grounds as the existing traps in Van Ninh district, Khanh Hoa province. The results show that the majority of the catches of all three types of test traps were crab species with high economic value (accounting for 75 to 82% of the total yield). The catch yield of the reference trap was about 1.5 times higher than that of test trap type 2, and 3 times higher than that of test trap type 1. In the second test, the trap distance was increased from 6m to 12m, resulting in a higher yield (from 1.2 to 1.7 times) compared to the first test. Two new collapsible cage models keep crab quality better (no dead crabs). This result confirmed that the traps with two new dropping doors are completely capable of catching crabs, but further improvements and testing are still needed in the future. This approach helps open up new research directions and applications of new types of doors to increase the storage volume of crabs in traps, and contributes to minimizing problems of crab quality degradation due to the trap storage process.
