Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics of sperm from Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) cultured in Lam Dong province, Vietnam. Sperm was collected from sexually mature male Russian sturgeon, with average weights of (9.86±1.58 kg). The physicochemical characteristics were determined using appropriate methods. The results showed: Russian sturgeon sperm had a volume of (63.33±25.74 ml), spermatocrit (60.56±3.91%), density (0.37×109 sperm/ml), osmotic pressure (69.65±5.06 mOsm/kg), Na+ ion concentration (34.42±2.10 mM), K+ (2.30±0.14 mM), Ca2+ (0.36±0.04 mM), Mg2+ (0.73±0.05 mM), Cl- (13.62±0.53 mM), Na+/Cl- ratio (14.97±0.56), and protein concentration (0.69±0.07 mg/ml). The percentage of motility, duration of motility, and velocity of sperm from Russian sturgeon were (75.00±15.41%, 158.89±36.21s, and 92.80±3.71 μm/s), respectively. These results can help develop preservatives and motility stimulants for sperm, contributing to the cryopreservation and artificial insemination of Russian sturgeon.
