Abstract

This study aims to analyze and estimate the lifespan of head rope and ground rope used in bottom pair trawl fisheries in North Nha Trang Ward, Khanh Hoa Province. Data were collected through retrospective interviews with 17 bottom pair-trawl vessel owners regarding fishing gear usage and fishing intensity during the period of 2024–2025. Statistical analyses were conducted using R software, including the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, confidence interval estimation using the Student’s t-distribution, and simple linear regression analysis to examine the relationship between total annual towing hours and ropes’ lifespan. The results show that the average lifespan of the head rope with a 90% confidence interval ranging from 9.58 to 11.01 months. Meanwhile, the average lifespan of the ground rope was between 8.51 and 9.84 months. The regression models explained approximately 86% to 87% of the variation in lifespan for both head rope and ground rope. The results provide a scientific basis for estimating the appropriate replacement time of rope components in bottom pair trawl fisheries, contributing to the optimization of maintenance costs, improvement of fishing efficiency, and reduction of accidents caused by broken ropes.

Key words: Pair trawl, rope, lifespan.
