Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the size selectivity of gillnet which was used to capture pelagic species in the waters of Thua Thien Hue province. A total of 48 fishing sets of the gillnet fishery was conducted of the coast of Quang Dien district, from April to May 2021. The study used a selectivity model to determine the selection parameters for herring (S. jussieu), sardines (Clupanodon spp.), round scad (D. maruadsi) and bluefish (R. kanagurta) using gillnet with the mesh sizes of 26 mm and 30 mm. The results showed that the contribution of herring was highest with 37.2%, followed by sardines with 23.0%, and round scad with 12.5%; the bluefish had a lowest contribution with 5.1% of the catch. The proportion of undersized fish in the catches ranged from 3.1 ÷ 98.1%. The study has determined the selectivity factor of four target species, including: herring: 3.3; sardines: 3.4; round scad: 3.7 and bluefish: 3.6. Overall, the catch composition and size selectivity of gillnet fishery were described and could be a potential implication for developing the local gillnet fishery in the study area.
