Abstract
In Vietnam, lobster farming (mainly Panulirus ornatus and P. homarus) has been developing since 1992. The annual production of farmed lobster has reached about 2,400 tons with a value of more than US$120 in recent years. The results withdrawn from a literature review, combined with interviews of key informants, and field trips, showed that the wild lobster pueruli have been imported into Vietnam since 2013, mainly from Indonesia and then from the Philippines. The amount of imported ornate lobster pueruli has fluctuated greatly in recent years (315,000-10,730,000 pueruli/year). The price of ornate lobster puerulus in 2021 decreased by 42% compared to 2017. There were 7 large lobster rearing areas including Nha Trang, Ninh Hoa, Cam Ranh (Khanh Hoa), Song Cau, Tuy An, Tuy Hoa (Phu Yen) and Quy Nhon (Binh Dinh). The techniques of transporting, holding and rearing lobster seed have been improved gradually in the direction of improving the survival rate. In addition, the export ban on puerulus lobsters from several countries; the lack of regulations on technical standards for lobster seed; instability of the commercial-sized lobster market; and the lack of adequate access to relevant technical advances by lobster nursery farmers were major obstacles to the supply of ornate lobster seed for commercial farming.
