Abstract
This study was conducted to assess the current status of exploitation of Bong-lao fingerling in the estuaries of Ben Tre province. Primary data were collected by interviewing 61 fisherman households using of stow net (22 households) and push net (39 households) at the landing site of Dai estuary, Ham Luong estuary, and Co Chien estuary. The results showed that the season of fingerling fishing was from September to December every year with the average number of fishing days per month of 17.2 days/month for the stow net and 18.6 days/month for the push net. Production of fingerlings of the stow net was 461 fingerlings/day/ship and estimated at 29.2 thousand fingerlings/year/ship, for the push net was 421 thousand fingerlings/day/ship, and estimated at 31.5 thousand fingerlings/year/ship. The total cost of the push net was 3.05 million VND/day with revenue of 4.35 million VND/day, and the profit margin was 42.6%. Total cost and revenue of the stow net of 1.66 million VND/day and 3.13 million VND/day, respectively, were lower than the push net. However, the profit margin of the stow net was higher at 91.0%. Most fishermen believed that production of Bong-lao fingerling was declining compared to the past due to changing weather, overfishing, environmental pollution, and flow changes.
