Abstract

Aquaculture, the fastest growing food production sector in the world, is seen as the first choice to address the food needs of a planet with a growing population. However, criticisms have arisen around aquaculture, most related to the destruction of ecosystems such as mangroves to build aquaculture farms, as well as the environmental impact of the waste water to the receiving ecosystem. The inherent benefits of aquaculture such as large food production and economic returns have led the scientific community to search for diverse strategies to minimize negative impacts, rather than reducing or stopping these operations. Aquaculture may be an optimal solution, but is also currently the cause of many problems related to environmental health, however, newly proposed strategies have demonstrated that it can be achieved a sustainable aquaculture. Such strategies should be supported and implemented by various environmental agencies from all States. In addition, improving laws and regulations for aquaculture is an urgent need. Only in such a scenario would aquaculture be a sustainable practice.
