Abstract
Seaweeds (macroalgae) consist of three phyla: red seaweed (Rhodophyta), green seaweed (Chlorophyta) and brown seaweed (Orchrophyta) with over 6,000 identifi ed species. They play an important role in marine ecosystems, being the primary producer in the marine food chains. Seaweeds provide food and shelter for many aquatic animals. Further studies show that seaweed can use wastes, especially wastes from aquaculture systems as a source of nutrients to increase their biomass. In addition, seaweeds can be used as an important food source for farming of some aquatic cultured species. This review demonstrates the role of seaweeds in sustainable aquaculture development.
