Abstract

     This study aimed to identify current fish composition in water bodies in My Tho, in the context that saline intrusion has advanced into the inner city in recent years. Research data would provide the necessary information for the exploitation, fish farming and protection of fish resource in local area. Fish samples were collected periodically twice each month by fishing gears and buying from fishermen at 4 capture locations in My Tho. Taxonomy of fishes was mainly based on morphological methods following published fish taxonomy documents. The results showed that there were 56 species of fish (belonging to 29 families of 11 orders) to appear in 2018 in My Tho. The Perciformes order had the largest number with 15 species (26.79%) of 10 families (34.48%). Siluriformes order had 8 species (14.29%) of 6 families (20.69%). Gobiiformes order had 8 species (14.29%) of 3 families (10.34%). Especially, Cypriniformes order only had one family but it's species composition was very diverse with 14 species (25%). Besides, the result showed that other orders of fish had from 1 to 3 species (1.79-5.36%) and ranged from 1 to 3 families (3.45-10.34%). Moreover, there were some species of brackish water fish to appear in water bodies in My Tho at the period of salinisation.
