Abstract
The research aimed to determine the life cycle, fecundity, suitable temperature and pH for development of Brachionus rubens; ultimatelty applied for the mass culture of rotifers to meet the demand of natural food for aquaculture in the Mekong Delta. The detailed objectives were to determine (1) Effects of pH on the life cycle of B. rubens; (2) Effects of temperature on the life cycle of B. rubens and (3) Some reproductive characteristics of Brachionus rubens. The study was conducted in the laboratory condition containing 1 rotifer in a small cup containing 30 mL water and 10 replicates. The results showed that the life cycle of B. rubens was to 4.08±0.42 days and carried 5.09±1.20 eggs at pH = 8. At 26ºC, the life cycle of B.rubens was 5.09±1.52 days and carried 8.06±3.81 eggs. At room temperature 28ºC, the life span was 4.80±0.20 days; maturation duration was 14.05±0.73 hours, embryonic development duration was 9.82±0.39 hours, spawning interval was 3.31±0.70 hours and mean fecundity was 6.50±0.34 eggs.
Key words: Brachionus rubens, biological characteristic, Rotifera.
