Abstract
Based on 450 interviews of fishing vessels in Quang Nam province and surrounding areas in 2 years (2016 – 2017), the study has shown that: A huge number of less than 20 Hp fishing vessels with 4,394 vessels, which operate within 7 nautical miles back to the shore with strong effected fishing gears to marine resources such as bottom trawlers, traps, trammel net. In addition, there are 272 fishing vessels which 20-<90 Hp, of which 50 bottom trawlers have been operating in near-shore areas leading to continuously reducing of the catches & productivities in recent years. The catches of less than 20 Hp fleets in Quang Nam province have been reduced from 27.9 tons per year in 2015 down to 11.314 tons per year in 2016; the 20-<90 Hp fleets, also reduce from 35.4 tons per year down to 20.2 tons per year respectively in 2016. In which, the reducing of productivities and profits are clearly shown at fleets: traps, gillnet and trawl fisheries. The reality also reflected that, more than 60% of fishers is aware that the reducing of the catches due to 20% reduction of the marine resources and many fisheries are operating at same fishing grounds. The study provides important information to local fishery managers and scientists to see the current status, proposed solutions to a suitable fishing operation to resources, appropriate management solutions forwarding to sustainable fishery development in Quang Nam province and surrounding areas.
