Abstract
ABSTRACT
To assess the current status of coastal fishing activities in Ninh Thuan waters, 339 fishing boats were surveyed during the 2022-2023 NE monsoon and the 2023 SW monsoon fishing seasons. Data collected on characteristics of fishing boats, fishing methods, fishing effort, yield, CPUE, labor and production efficiency. The results supported the allocation of fishing fleets. The survey results showed that 62.7% of fishing boats operated in coastal waters of Ninh Thuan province (compares with 37.3% of fishing boats catched in the inshore waters) with the main fishing gear being gillnets, purse seine, hand line, traps, lift nets, push net, trawl, diving and falling net. There was a phenomenon of fishing gears switching during the NE and SW monsoon seasons. The fishing labor varied between groups of boat lengths and between fishing gears. The ratio of fishermen had professional certificates was low, especially in the small boats. Fishermen with over 10 years of experience accounted for more than 50%. Most of the laborers have only primary or secondary school level. The fishing effort has a large difference between fishing gears, boat length groups and fishing seasons, the lowest being fishing effort of diving and trawl. Fishing effort in SW monsoon fishing season is generally higher than that in NE season. Yield and CPUE increase with boat size and there is a large difference between fishing gears. Profit is proportional to boat size, different between fishing gear groups and seasons. The average income of fishermen has a difference between boat size groups, but not too much.
